James Batchelor and Collaborators

From the human body to the cosmos, HYPERSPACE is an inquiry into the metrics we use to measure the deep unknowns of the universe. It proposes a study of the human body seen through the prism of cosmology, a mapping of the universe within and around it. The interior and exterior landscapes of the body are deconstructed, producing a self-critique of the masculine body and its dominance in space exploration. In HYPERSPACE, the fleshy material of the body bends, stretches and is reconfigured as alien transmutation, appearing simultaneously colossal and microscopic.

HYPERSPACE is the third in a series of works from James Batchelor and his collaborators that grew from a unique opportunity to be part of a scientific expedition to study sub-Antarctic islands in 2016.

Hyperspace Alternative - James Batchelor

James Batchelor and Collaborators are a team of independent dance artists from Australia. Led by Choreographer James Batchelor, Creative Producer BekBerger, Composer Morgan Hickinbotham and guests, the team brings together a unique precision of practice and friendship that allows for inspired movement through a variety of contexts. Their body of work, including DEEPSPACE (DanceMassive 2017) and REDSHIFT (Chunky Move, Next Move Commission 2017) is known for its visual clarity, architectural composition and rhythmic playfulness. With a commitment to slowness and sensitivity, movement is hypnotically focused and detailed, drawing audiences into contemplative and imaginative realms. They have presented extensively in various festivals in Australia and overseas. Their latest creation HYPERSPACE (Aerowaves Twenty19) is the culmination of two years of practice together and will tour Australia and Europe in 2019/2020.
